Natural stone retaining walls

Stone suits the older houses and river bluffs around Kingsport, and a well-built dry wall can stand for generations.

Stacked stone has a long history in the upper Holston valley, from field walls on old farms to the three-story stone house that forms part of Blountville's Deery Inn. Limestone and dolomite lie under much of the area, and fieldstone turned up by plows found its way into walls across Sullivan and Hawkins counties. Today, stone walls are built in a few distinct ways.

Why does a dry stone wall last?

Water slips through the gaps between stones, so pressure doesn't build behind the wall the way it does behind solid concrete, and the wall can flex a little as the ground moves. None of that excuses a soft base, though: it wants compacted footing stone, a gravel zone at its back and a steady backward tilt into the hill. How tall it can go depends on the stone and the skill of the person laying it.

Fixing an old stone wall

Many older stone walls around downtown Kingsport, Church Hill and Blountville only need one section relaid where roots or water pushed stones out of place. Ask whether the contractor can match the stone and the pattern. If the property is in a historic district, find out whether exterior work needs review before anyone starts.

Terraced beds on a slope

A series of low stone walls can turn a bank you can't mow into planting beds and a path. Keeping each tier short also keeps the work simpler and the base easier to drain.

We don't give prices. A contractor can only price a wall honestly after walking the slope, seeing how a machine gets in and learning what the wall has to hold up, so treat any phone figure as a ballpark at most.

Common questions

Is stone stronger than block?

Strength comes from the base and drainage more than the material. Either can hold well on a good base with drainage. Stone is usually chosen for looks, and tall loaded walls often use a block or concrete core with a stone face.

Can you match my existing fieldstone wall?

Often, when similar stone is available nearby. Ask to see samples before the work starts.
